Preventative Maintenance to Avoid Water Damage

Debris in your gutters will prevent proper water flow.

Not all disasters are preventable, but there are some precautions you can take to be sure your home is at a lower risk of water damage. Here are some ways you can make sure water stays outside of your home this spring.

While you're out pulling weeds, planting flowers, or laying mulch, look for low spots near the foundation of your home. Low spots can lead water into your basement or crawl space, and also act as a breeding ground for insects. These low spots can be filled with compacted soil to ensure water doesn't pool up around your foundation.

While making your rounds, you can also check for any cracks in your concrete areas near your home (sidewalks, patio areas, etc.) and have them filled. Water should always flow away from your home, and sometimes cracked or damaged concrete can lead water in the wrong direction.

Lastly, you can check your gutters for holes or excessive amounts of debris. Improper gutter drainage may lead water to travel into walls, crawl spaces, and basements.
